Deep-shaft mines such as the Norrie, Aurora, Ashland, Newport, and Pabst drew immigrants from England, Finland, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Sweden; the City of Ironwood's population passed 7,500 by 1890 and reached about 10,000 by 1900.

The 1926 Pabst Mine Disaster killed three electricians and trapped 43 miners for up to five days.

Iron mining on the Gogebic Range peaked around 1920 and ceased in 1967, pushing the area to reinvent itself around forestry and winter tourism.
