Local History

The township was created on November 27, 1866 at the Houghton County Clerk's office, with its first meeting on December 17, 1866; Native peoples had mined native copper here for thousands of years before European settlement.

The Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, formed in 1871 with Quincy Adams Shaw as first president, became the leading copper producer in the U.S. from 1868 to 1886 and led the world from 1869 to 1876, once mining about half the nation's copper.

In 1868 Calumet and Hecla built what is described as the first industrial hospital in the United States, and offered worker clubhouses, bowling alleys, and libraries with material in some 20 languages.

On Christmas Eve, December 24, 1913, 73 people (59 of them children) died in a stampede at Italian Hall after someone falsely shouted "fire" during a striking miners' families' party.

Culture and Community

A strongly Finnish-rooted community: as of 2000, about 40.7% of residents claimed Finnish ancestry, with notable Italian, German, French, and English heritage as well.

Pasties, the Cornish and Finnish miners' hand pies, are a Copper Country staple born of the mining era.
