Copper prospecting began on the hillside later named Quincy Hill in 1847-48, where crews found prehistoric Ojibwe copper mining pits; the Quincy Mining Company was chartered in October 1848.

The company founded the settlement of Hancock in 1859, naming it for John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence; it incorporated as a village in 1863 and a city in 1903.
