Local History

Platted in 1901 under the name Palatka; the area had earlier been called Spring Valley and Newtown.

Six iron mines opened here: the Baltic (1900), Caspian (1903), Young's (1904), Fogarty (1907), Berkshire (1908), and the Buck (1922).

The Caspian Mine was the most productive mine in Iron County from its 1903 opening until it closed in 1937.

Incorporated as a village in 1918 and as a city (commission-manager government) in 1949-1950.

Culture and Community

Strongly Italian and Croatian immigrant heritage; the 2000 census recorded about 26.6% Italian ancestry, the largest single group.

The Italian fraternal order Duca Degli Abruzzi was founded in Caspian in 1909.

The Caspian Community Center, built in 1921 by the Presbyterian Board of National Missions in Arts and Crafts style, educated immigrant families until 1950 and is now run by the Caspian Athletic Association.
