Platted in 1881 and named for a nearby icy waterfall ("crystal falls") on the Paint River; a post office opened in 1885.

Solomon D. Hollister and German-born George Runkel arrived in 1880, discovered iron-ore outcrops along the Paint River, and formed the Crystal Falls Iron Company.

The Fairbanks (Paint River) mine opened in 1882 and ran until 1913, shipping 382,089 tons of ore; the Chicago & North-Western Railroad reached town in June 1882.

Iron County was split off from Marquette County in 1885, named for its most important natural resource.
