Local History

The area's first sawmill was built in the late 1830s (accounts cite Theodore Dean in 1838), taking advantage of Michigan's timber stands.

Originally called Varna (some local histories say Varney, for an early industrialist who ran a grain elevator); the name was changed to Clio, the muse of history, in the mid-1860s after the railroad arrived.
