Local History

Clark Dibble of New York was the first white settler, buying land in March 1834; the early settlement was called Dibbleville.

In 1837 William M. Fenton and Robert LeRoy bought Dibble's land, sawmill, and water rights; per local legend the two played a hand of poker to name the town, Fenton won, and LeRoy was consoled with the main street named LeRoy Street.

The post office opened as Fentonville on June 26, 1837, and was renamed Fenton on February 2, 1866; the township was organized March 6, 1838.

The Village of Fenton incorporated in 1863; the township became a charter township in 1980.

Culture and Community

The Fenton Hotel Tavern and Grille offers dining in an 1856 building that once held one of the city's first telephones.

The 1938 former fire station on South Leroy Street became the well-known Fenton Fire Hall restaurant (rebranded in 2025 as the Latin-influenced Honcho Fuego with Leroy's Lounge below).
