The village was incorporated in 1873.

The Tivoli Theatre, built in 1928 with about 1,390 seats and an original Wurlitzer organ, was the first theatre in DuPage County to show 'talkies'; when it opened on Christmas Day 1928, about 4,000 people lined up to see the 'Wonder Theatre of suburban Chicago.'
