The site was known by a Native American name, Sivogah ('Willows'); Ebenezer Brown brought cattle in 1849 and, with his wife Phebe Draper Palmer Brown, established formal settlement in 1850.

A fort was begun in 1854-1856 during tensions with Native Americans but was never completed.

In the 1940s Draper's poultry co-op made it the 'Egg Basket of Utah,' shipping eggs coast to coast and supplying U.S. troops in the South Pacific during WWII.
