Local History

Fort Hamilton was built in 1791 by General Arthur St. Clair as a supply post and named for Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury.

The settlement was platted as Fairfield in 1794, later renamed Hamilton, and incorporated as a city in 1857.

Abraham Lincoln visited on September 17, 1859, campaigning for Ohio gubernatorial candidate William Dennison.

The Great Miami River Flood of March 1913 killed roughly 200 people in Hamilton, destroyed all four city bridges, and left about 10,000 residents homeless; it led to the creation of the Miami Conservancy District, the first flood-control district of its kind in the nation.

Operation Pumpkin, a downtown pumpkin-and-art festival launched in 2011, features giant-pumpkin weigh-ins, carving competitions, and more than 100 vendors each October.
