Local History

Platted in 1802 by Stephen Vail Jr., who bought land on the east bank of the Great Miami River from Judge John Cleves Symmes; the land was part of the 1788 Symmes Purchase.

Name origin is debated: after Vail's hometown of Middletown, New Jersey; the midway point of navigation on the Great Miami River; or its position roughly halfway between Cincinnati and Dayton.

Incorporated as a village on February 11, 1833, and chartered as a city in 1886.

The Miami and Erie Canal (construction began 1825) linked Middletown to Toledo and Cincinnati and drove early growth; after the Great Flood of 1913 the canal bed was paved over to become Verity Parkway.

Culture and Community

Middletown High School's teams are the Middies, a longstanding local identity marker.

The historic Sorg Opera House at 63 South Main Street, built by paper magnate Paul Sorg in the 1890s, has been restored by a nonprofit and hosts concerts and performing arts in revitalized downtown.
