Local History

Recorded history reaches back to the 1600s, with French coureurs des bois and voyageurs traveling the Muskegon River by canoe; French fur trappers settled around 1834.

The city is named for the Ojibwe leader Naw-o-gee (also rendered Nuwagon), noted for battlefield courage and a signer of the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw; an alternate origin is an Algonquian word meaning "much water."

The Penoyer brothers, from Chicago, built the first sawmill at Penoyer Creek, launching the county's lumber industry; John Brooks arrived in 1836 to harvest lumber and became the first postmaster in 1847.

At the industry's height, more logs reportedly floated down the Muskegon River than any other river, driven to mills in Muskegon and rafted on to Chicago.

Culture and Community

The Logging Festival, held in Brooks Park in downtown Newaygo for more than 75 years, features professional and amateur lumberjack competitions (two-man saw, axe throwing), live wood carving, a parade, food trucks, and vendors - a direct nod to the town's logging roots.
