The area saw little settlement before 1870; soon after, the growing lumber town became the seat of Newaygo County.

The White River Railroad was incorporated on November 13, 1879, and on April 1, 1880 opened a 13-mile line running north from White Cloud to tap the White River area's timber.

A widely repeated (but never firmly documented) local legend says the lumber town was renamed for a Native leader called Chief White Cloud; the Ojibwe name Waabaanakwad literally translates as 'White Cloud.'
