Local History

Began as 'Walkers' Grove,' named for pioneer James Walker, who built a sawmill along the DuPage River around 1828 and is credited as the first European-American to claim land in the area; he was led there by his father-in-law, Methodist circuit rider Rev. Jesse Walker.

Chester Ingersoll laid out the southern blocks starting in 1834; the community took the name 'Plainfield' (platted 1841) and predates the 1836 creation of Will County itself.

On August 28, 1990, a violent F5 tornado struck the community, killing 29 people, injuring 353, damaging or destroying over 1,100 homes, and leveling Plainfield High School; the National Weather Service did not issue a tornado warning until roughly 10-12 minutes after the tornado had already hit.

Grew from about 4,500 residents in 1990 to 44,762 in 2020, making it one of the fastest-growing communities in the Chicago metro region.

Culture and Community

Plainfield Fest, held each July in Historic Downtown and organized by the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation, is the signature community festival.

Settlers' Park hosts summer outdoor concerts; downtown also runs classic car nights, outdoor movies, and concert series.
