Local History

First settled by people of European descent in the mid-1850s; Archibald Gardner may have been the first to settle the land, and the town was originally called Gardnerville.

A judicial precinct was established in 1879, when Judge Charles Smith officially changed the settlement's name from Gardnersville to Riverton.

Early growth was slow due to lack of irrigation water until three canals (including the South Jordan Canal completed in 1876 and the Utah and Salt Lake Canal finished in 1881) brought Jordan River water to the benchlands.

The Salt Lake and Utah Railroad ran through Riverton from 1914 to 1945 as a commuter and freight line; a major fire destroyed the town school on July 30, 1926.

Riverton Town Days is an annual Independence Day celebration that has run for well over half a century, featuring a rodeo, parade, carnival, chuckwagon breakfast, movie in the park, bingo, children's contests, and fireworks.
