Local History

The area was originally home to Potawatomi people; in 1833 Jay R. Monroe received a land patent for 65 acres along the Lake Michigan shore.

Permanent settlement came in the 1850s with sawmills established on the Black River; timber was shipped by steamboat to Chicago and Milwaukee.

South Haven was incorporated as a village in 1869 and as a city in 1902.

Around the early 1900s the town boomed as a resort with theaters, a casino, an opera house, an amusement park, and lakeside resorts served by passenger steamboats.

Culture and Community

The National Blueberry Festival, held every year since 1963 (calling itself 'national' from 1969), runs the second weekend in August with a parade, free concerts, blueberry pancake breakfasts, and pie-eating contests.
