Founded in 1904 as a planned community and incorporated in 1905, Twin Falls rose out of arid sagebrush desert made farmable by irrigation.

I.B. Perrine founded the Twin Falls Land and Water Company and spearheaded the Milner Dam, completed in 1905, which brought Snake River water to the land and is why Perrine is credited as the city's founder.

The city is named for a nearby waterfall on the Snake River and grew into a processing center for beans, sugar beets, and other crops.

In September 1974 daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon in a steam-powered rocket cycle; his parachute deployed prematurely in high winds and the attempt failed.
