The Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of the Pottawatomi lived here in settled villages, farming corn, hunting, harvesting wild rice, and making maple sugar before European settlement.

Nelson Chambers arrived in 1837 and cleared land for farming; by the 1840s the growing settlement was called 'Chamber's Corners,' with a school established by 1844.

A wooden plank toll road linking Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo was built in 1855, making the town a natural stopping place for travelers.
