Land was claimed between 1831 and 1837 by Erastus Gary and, from Connecticut, brothers Warren L. and Jesse C. Wheaton.

In 1848 the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad named its depot 'Wheaton' after the brothers gave right-of-way; the town platted in 1853.

Incorporated as a village on February 24, 1859 (Warren Wheaton first president) and as a city on April 24, 1890.

The first mayor was Judge Elbert H. Gary, son of founder Erastus Gary, who later led U.S. Steel and gave his name to Gary, Indiana.
