First settled in 1824 and officially organized on March 7, 1834; named "York" because so many residents had emigrated from New York State (Othniel Gooding was the first township clerk).

Grew to about 1,197 residents by Michigan statehood in 1837; early hamlets included Mooreville (the early trading/civic center), Saline (in the northwest corner) and settlements like Nora and Urania that grew around Toledo & Ann Arbor Railroad stations.

When the railroad chose Milan over Mooreville in 1878, Milan's growth was assured, eclipsing Mooreville.

Originally a full 36-square-mile survey township, it lost land as Saline incorporated portions in 1966 and Milan in 1967.
