Established in 1876 and named after Edward Breitung, a miner and U.S. Representative from Michigan.

In the fall of 1871, Indiana explorer John Lane Buell discovered an iron-ore outcrop while camping on what became Quinnesec Avenue; it grew into the Quinnesec Mine and the feature known as the 'Devil's Ice Box.'

Buell hauled the first 53-ton ore shipment by sleigh and wagon to Menominee in 1874, where it smelted into high-quality iron and touched off Menominee Range mining.

Quinnesec was platted in 1876; the Menominee River Railroad reached it in 1877 and pushed on to Iron Mountain by 1880.

Culture and Community

Early settler John Buell built the Pioneer School House (forerunner of the Breitung Township School District) and donated land for Catholic and Methodist churches.

The township's identity is rooted in Upper Peninsula iron-and-timber heritage shared with adjoining Iron Mountain and Kingsford.
