Dickinson County was organized in 1891 from parts of Marquette, Menominee, and Iron counties, and named for Donald M. Dickinson, U.S. Postmaster General.

Iron Mountain was settled in 1878 and incorporated as a city in 1889, taking its name from the local iron ore.
