Local History

The area was first settled in the 1870s, and Norway was founded in 1877 after a test pit was sunk for the Norway Mine.

The settlement was originally called Ingolsdorf and was renamed Norway in 1879; according to Wikipedia the name came from a forest of Norway pines near the original town site, though the town also reflects heavy Norwegian and Scandinavian immigration.

Norway incorporated as a village in 1891 and became a city in 1944.

Dickinson County, organized in 1891 from parts of Marquette, Menominee, and Iron counties, was Michigan's last county formed and was named for Donald M. Dickinson, U.S. Postmaster General.
