G.A.R. Island Park: an island in the Grand River that the city purchased in 1897; used by the Eaton County Battalion of the Grand Army of the Republic for encampments from 1909 to 1929, named in 1909, and connected to Mill Pointe Park by a riverwalk completed in 2022.

The English Inn: originally the "Medovue" mansion built in 1927 for Oldsmobile executive Irving Jacob Reuter, later the Catholic Bishop's residence (1940-1962), and an inn since 1989.

Local History

The area was home to the Potawatomi; pioneers began settling in the 1830s and 1840s after the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw, drawn by timber and water power from the Grand River and Spring Brook.

Early settlers included Amos Spicer, Pierpoint Spicer, Samuel Hamlin and C.C. Darling; a sawmill was built near Spring Brook in 1836 and the Old Red Mill for grinding corn in 1837.

Founded in 1837, incorporated as a village in 1871 and chartered as a city in 1881.

In 1869 E.B. Frost discovered mineral water underground; fourteen wells fed mineral baths and by 1880 eleven hotels operated for visitors, an era that lasted until the last mineral bath closed in 1962.

Culture and Community

The annual Fourth of July Celebration is the city's signature event, along with the Hometown Family Christmas.

"The Only Eaton Rapids on Earth" comes from a book by local historian W. Scott Munn and inspires events like "The Only Eaton Rapids on Earth Fun Run."

From 2012 into the early 2020s the city hosted the Urban Air festival, a gathering of Airstream trailers from across the U.S. and Canada, discontinued after 2021 to refocus on the Fourth of July and the reopening of G.A.R. Island Park.
