The Ledges: roughly 300-million-year-old sandstone outcrops running nearly five miles along the Grand River, the largest such formation in central Michigan.

Local History

Henry Trench settled the area in 1847; settlers established the village and a post office around 1850.

A railroad stop was added in 1869 via the Flint & Pere Marquette Railroad, and the community incorporated as a city in 1871.

John Burtch founded the Seven Islands Resort in 1872, running the Dolly Varden steamer and a small inn on Second Island.

By 1888 the railroad trestle (High Bridge) was built and Grand Ledge became the second city in Michigan, after Lansing, to get electric lights; the resort drew an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 visitors a year.

Culture and Community

Yankee Doodle Days, held every third weekend in June, features a parade on Bridge Street, Market on the Grand vendors at Jaycee Park, kids' activities, live bands at the Fitzgerald ballfield, and fireworks over Island Park.

The 1886 Grand Ledge Opera House survives and now hosts weddings and community events.

Grand Ledge High School has a strong athletic tradition, including baseball state titles (1977, 1995), a football title (2000), and six girls' gymnastics championships (2008-2013).
