Founded in 1844 when Reverend John Jay 'Father' Shipherd and 39 followers from Oberlin College arrived by ox-cart on a wilderness hilltop with an oak grove, driving their herds before them.

Campus legend says Shipherd's horse kept returning to the oak-grove hilltop, which he took as divine direction for where to build the college.

Shipherd named the settlement Olivet after the biblical Mount of Olives, intending a coeducational Christian college open to students of all races.

The Michigan legislature initially blocked a full college charter while Olivet held anti-slavery views; it operated as the Olivet Institute until being chartered in 1859.
