Local History

Charles McLean and Sylvester Hubbard, the first settlers, arrived near Pine Run Creek in 1833.

A community was platted and recorded as Vienna, but when the township was organized under that name in 1837, the town itself was renamed Pine Run.

The Pine Run post office cycled through names, becoming Thetford in 1844, reverting to Pine Run in 1852, and finally closing in 1905.

Clio, entirely surrounded by the township, was first named Varna after an early settler; the Pere Marquette Railroad put a station there in 1861, and the name was changed in 1866 to Clio, the Greek muse of history.

Culture and Community

The Clio Area Amphitheater has presented outdoor summer concerts across many genres since 1987, with a modest gate charge and season passes.

Clio Cast & Crew, a community theatre serving the area for decades, bought its own home in the former Theatre 57 building on West Vienna Road in 2003.

Auto City Speedway runs short-track stock-car racing on its paved half-mile, quarter-mile, and Figure 8 tracks every Saturday night from April through September.
